Day 10 10:08am - Just a quick mail - thanks to steph and all mates, family and students for big support.  Regular blog will return when we get going again.  At the moment we’re in a position of putting in a new rudder. 3 characteristics needed to be successful.

1. how you prepare

2. how you compete

3. how you react to set backs.

People are standing up and being counted on this last one - Skip, Don, Livar, Matty, Yaakov, - all good on the technical end.

Day 8,  Monday 12th January. 12:48am  -  Surfs up.  trade winds picked up a bit and the boat is surfing nicely towards the West. Day 7 recorded 103 miles.  The record for the most amount of miles covered by an ocean rowing boat is 117 over a 24 hour period. With these winds, we’ll hopefully have a go of this over the coming days.  Ryan

Day 5:  12:45am.  Just finished 2nd shift on Day 5. Each day ’starts’ at 6pm. Each rower then rows 2 hours on 2 hours off for a total of 6 sessions.  Progress is going well.  We need to be averaging 100 miles a day plus in order to break the record.  We’re just about managing that now and hopefully should do even better when we reach the trade winds.  We’re estimated to get far enough South to where the trade winds begin by Saturday morning.

Nights were originally tough enough - getting used to rowing every two hours. Not saying we’re used to it but definitely adjusting somewhat for now.  Food rations aren’t too bad but every shift someone is mention how nice some real food would go down.  Eating is mostly done during daylight as it’s easier to sleep at night when it’s darker and cooler.

Crew is going very well.  Everyone is over their seasickness - there were a few casualties over the first few days (self included) but thankfully not one person missed a shift as a result.  Winds are very slack for the next 24 hours so 100 miles might not be met - very confident of making up for it when we reach the trades.   All the best, Ryan

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the messages.  Big boost to get off shift and get some positive stuff.  Fair play to ya Pete D for the support.  Weather is slight crosswind but crew going very well. By 6 tonight we’ll be 10% distance across. any  sct’s lookin in hope training is going strong and best of luck to juniors YS  Bray in the final. Cheers for all the texts prior to departure - will  remember yours beefcake. 29 degrees out now and we’re trying to average 100 miles a day. Bearing at the moment to reach 34N, 23W, hopefully trade winds & currents will help us along in our row straight across to Barbados,     All the best,   Ryan

Hi and all the best for the new year. We´re hoping to leave on an outward tide on Saturday 3rd January at about 430pm (subject to weather and arrival of water maker).  Hanging around the Canaries isn´t ideal but was made up for yesterday by our first trip out on the Artemis. She managed to reach 5knots (notable mention to Gareth for snapping an oar) which was good for a start but we know she´ll be travelling faster along easterly swells in just a few days.
